Women tend to be divided in their opinion on whether they favor bras. Whichever way you may be inclined to think, however, there are a few things about bras that you should know.
Bras are not necessarily good for your breasts
Breasts that aren’t constantly supported get a workout as they move about. They grow better supporting tissue and gain in tone. The tightness of bras impedes circulation to the breasts which contributes to premature sagging. When you stop restricting blood flow to your breasts, you help improve their elasticity.
It can be hard to a find bra that fits correctly
One commonly quoted study about bra fit finds that 80 percent of women wear the wrong size. While women’s bodies are unique, and do not often fit well into standard-sized undergarments, it’s also important to realize that there are no standards. Different brands of bra makers use different sizing and measuring systems. Sizes work differently for different styles within a brand, as well. Since most women don’t put much effort into learning how bra sizes work, they can have a hard time finding something that fits them well.
Bras can be a sizable investment
The average woman owns 10 bras. Averaging at about $30 each, they are a $300 investment. If each bra lasts from 6 months to a year, it amounts to a lot of money. It’s money that can be usefully applied to many other things.
A bra can affect the way you breathe
Some bras can be too tight. Even if you don’t wear an uncomfortably tight bra, however, a bra does grip you around the chest. Many women, for this reason, breathe in a shallow pattern. If this is you, you should try to see what it feels like to breathe without your bra on.
An ill-fitting bra may be the cause of health problems
Many women suffer from postural problems and pain around the shoulders and back, because their bras aren’t the right fit. Some small studies have even found that the postural problems that come from incorrectly supported breasts exacerbate digestive complaints such as heartburn.
The problems that come from wearing bras may not show up in everyone. If you experience them, however, or if you just don’t see why bras may be necessary, you should rethink them.
